Olinguito Speaks Up by Cecilia Velástegui (Jade Fang, illustrator) is a bilingual (Spanish, English) children’s book that deserves a spot on your kid’s bookshelf.
The olinguito is a recently discovered species who lives in the Ecuadorian cloud forest–and isn’t he adorable?! Author Velástegui is a native of Ecuador and brilliantly explores the themes of respect for the environment and for the elderly, having this little thumb-sucking creature listen to tales of extinct animals.
As an added bonus, shy, unassuming Olinguito even finds the courage to speak up for his friend Tomás, who the other animals of the cloud forest make fun of for inventing tall tales, which, as it turns out, are actually true.
This story was engaging from start to finish, and the illustrations were simply gorgeous and sure to help hold a child’s attention.
Moreover, it’s great to see a bilingual book at a slightly higher than beginner level. Great addition to your child’s library! Highly recommended.
